Modern Conveniences We Take For Granted

There are some who say, rather convincingly, that the invention of the toilet and running water – modern plumbing – is what instigated the beginning of civilization and the industrialized society we Central Texans enjoy today.

But did you know that more people, worldwide, have mobile phones than have toilets? It’s true. In fact, according to water.org, 780 million people lack access to clean water. That’s more than 2.5 times the population of the United States.

Even more troubling is the fact that nearly 3.5 million people die each year from water, sanitation and hygiene-related causes.

Plumbing and access to clean water is something we take for granted. Central Texas homeowners expect clean water to come out of our faucets for drinking, showering, bathing and watering our lawns, and when it doesn’t, we contact a plumber to diagnose and repair the problem.

Imagine living in a world where running water wasn’t the norm, but rather a luxury. Scary thought, isn’t it?

So, as we enter a new year, let’s think about those “little” conveniences we take for granted – like working faucets, toilets that remove all the icky things we put in them, and nice, hot showers. And let’s be grateful we who live in Central Texas have these things as well as the well-trained men and women who take care of our Austin-area plumbing systems.
